How the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Works

Patient Referrals

  • The ABMDR informs the medical community worldwide about its availability to patients.
  • Patients, parents, other family members and medical professionals contact the ABMDR seeking a marrow match. The ABMDR requests blood sample or tissue type information from the patient.
  • The ABMDR types the tissue and searches the donor database for a bone marrow match.
  • If a match is found, preparations are made for the transplantation.
  • If a match is not found, the ABMDR continues to search for a match as new donors are registered.

Donor Recruitment

  • The ABMDR conducts recruitment drives in Armenian communities worldwide.
  • To register the donor simply gives a sample of blood or a mouth swab, which is later tissue typed in the laboratory, and analyzed for a potential match with one of the registered patients in need.
  • If a match is found, preparations are made for the transplantation.
  • If a match is not found, the donor's data remain in the registry to be used in searches for future patients.

International Networking and Information Sharing

  • As a member of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) and Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW), and National Marrow Donor Program-NMDP, the ABMDR regularly shares its patient and donor databases with others in the world registries to maximize the chance of a Match for Life.
